Comunicato stampa evento: From Private to Public: Collections at the Guggenheim

Dal venerdì 26 giugno 2009
al domenica 10 gennaio 2010

This exhibition explores the history of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation collection by bringing together 19th-century paintings and groundbreaking installations of the 1990s.

Through a combination of major gifts and purchases, the Guggenheim has continued its mission to collect and promote the "art of tomorrow" since its inception in 1937 with the Founding Collection of Solomon R. Guggenheim.

The personal compilations of five additional visionaries in the realm of modern art, and one pioneer in contemporary art of the 1990s, are today held by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation.

Introduction
The metamorphosis from private collection to public museum is an extraordinary transition. For the Guggenheim Museum this occurred in 1937, when Solomon R. Guggenheim established a foundation with the goal of opening a museum to publicly exhibit and preserve his holdings of nonobjective art. Guggenheim, an industrialist turned impassioned art collector, had begun to amass his modern art collection eight years prior under the guidance of the German painter Hilla Rebay. Although a great champion of nonobjective art--a method of abstraction that aspired to spiritual and utopian goals--Guggenheim also actively sought work that did not fit the mold of nonobjectivity, acquiring paintings by Marc Chagall, Amedeo Modigliani, and Henri Rousseau.
