Hung Nguyen Manh, nato nel 1976 ad Hanoi (Vietnam), si è laureato nel 2002 presso l’Università di Belle Arti e ha partecipato regolarmente a festival di arte performativa in Giappone e a Taiwan. Nel 2005 è stato un borsista della Fondazione Ford che gli ha permesso di esporre a Los Angeles.
Nel 2006, una sovvenzione dalla Dong Son Today Foundation ha finanziato la sua partecipazione al programma di residenza ART OMI Ghent, NY.
Nel 2007, grazie al sostegno dell’ Asian Cultural Council, ha partecipato ad un’altra residenza d’artista presso Location1 di New York.
Ha all’attivo mostre in musei, istituzioni e gallerie, dallo ZKM center of art and media di Karlsruhe, Germania, al Goethe Institute di Hanoi, Vietnam, alla Ethan Coen Gallery di NY, Usa, e alla Ifa Galleries di Berlino e Stoccarda, Germania.
Artista cosmopolita, versatile, apprezzato per la sua “bella pittura” e per i temi trattati in maniera ironica e intelligente, di se stesso dichiara:
“Amo l’ umorismo, e mi piace scherzare su tutto. Il Su-realismo è un linguaggio utile, che mi aiuta a creare divertimento. Mescolo pure elementi di hi-tech e di lo-tech nei miei quadri. Sono nato e cresciuto in un appartamento costruito a blocchi ad Hanoi - Vietnam. Mio padre era un pilota di combattimento, e mia madre era un ingegnere per il Vietnam Rail Way Corporation.
Nessuno nella mia famiglia si preoccupava dell'arte. Ai miei occhi, il Vietnam è uno dei paesi più strani del mondo. Le persone lavorano e si comportano secondo le abitudini di alcuni provenienti dalla vita contadina. Viviamo, litighiamo, costruiamo, mangiamo ... proprio come fanno i contadini. In Vietnam, la cultura del villaggio persiste e ha un potere nascosto che colpisce tutta la popolazione. Anche se stiamo correndo verso il capitalismo, questo stile di vita non deve scomparire. Questo è ciò che rende la gente vietnamita sempre speciale, ovunque si trovino”.
Le 12 tele presenti in mostra si ispirano alla globalizzazione imperante e allo spirito rurale che anima in egual misura gli animi dei vietnamiti, rappresentati, nello specifico delle tele in mostra, dai piloti alla guida degli aeroplani da guerra.
Hung Nguyen Manh è un artista che ha qualcosa da narrare ma che non affida al semplice racconto tutta la sua poetica: il connubio tra contenuto e contenitore raggiunge nella sua arte un perfetto equilibrio.
