"Schnell", "Les ailes de dieu", "Anything can happen, when an animal is your cameraman" - these are the very different titles of works by Algerian-born artist Adel Abdessemed (*1971), which will be shown for the very first time in Germany in the studio of Heidelberger Kunstverein. Abdessemed, whose works have been shown in several exhibitions and biennales, adresses themes like sexuality, politics and religion in his works and therefore often causes controversy.

"Les ailes de dieu" (2009), a set of two videos, each stars a single person - one man without arms, another without legs - who paint on large wooden panels while hanging down from a helicopter. The extreme situations, into which the artist has put the two men, almost blocks out their disability. The video "Schnell" (2005) portrays the endless fall of a video camera, which the artist dropped from a helicopter above Berlin. "Anything can happen, when an animal is your cameraman" (2008), a neon light installation, adresses the borderline animal/human being. All these works, along with Abdessemed's images, share the hint of a borderline and the potential to cross this demarcation or at least perceive it.

The exhibition curated by Martina Köppel-Yang is part of the project Parcours Exhibition in Heidelberg: "Becoming Intense – Becoming Animal – Becoming …“ organized by the cluster of excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global Context: Shifting Asymmetries in Cultural Flows" of the University of Heidelberg. The project is funded by Deutsche Forschungsgesellschaft (DFG).
