Franz Ackermann é nato a Neumark St. Veit nel 1963; vive e lavora a Berlino dal 1993. Trascorre un anno ad Honk Kong grazie alla prestigiosa borsa di studio DAAD. Nel corso del "000 gli è stata dedicata una personale presso il Castello di Rivoli, Torino, a cura di Marcella Beccaria. Nel 2001 ha tenuto una personale alla Gavin Brown's enterprise a New York, e parteciperà alle collettive: "Painting at the edge of the world" presso il Walker Art Center di Minneapolis; "Glee Painting Now" presso il Palm Beach Institute of Contemporary Art, Lake Worth.
