Ciocca Arte Contemporanea è lieta di presentare A matter of life, la seconda personale dell'artista Luisa Rabbia.

Il titolo della mostra prende il nome dal video omonimo in cui un uomo anziano e semplice consuma il proprio pasto. Mentre l'uomo mangia, alcuni elementi naturali escono dalla sua bocca. ".....Bisogna avere tanti cuori da vomitare in una vita....." ci dice l'artista, vomitare da la sensazione di ripartire da zero, attraverso la digestione del vissuto, il presente rinasce e tutto diventa parte di un unico ciclo vitale.

Nella mostra, il video e il grande disegno Tears and blood (2002), presentati alla prima personale newyorkese dell'artista presso la Galleria di Massimo Audiello nel 2002, divengono una scultura in ceramica esposta a terra dai toni acquerellati.

Il disegno, inciso nella ceramica, è un segno che corrode il materiale, un pensiero che si ritaglia il proprio spazio, come lentamente agisce il passare del tempo che cancella le impronte di chi prima c'era e ora non c'è più.

Tears and blood (2003) è una perfetta fusione tra disegno e scultura; l'acqua, le lacrime e il sangue sono liquidi vitali, ma anche simboli di situazioni emotive ancestrali. E' così che la doccia diventa il palcoscenico di un mondo visto dall'alto, in cui tutto passa veloce e scivola in un buco nero di cui non si scorge la fine.

Nei lavori della Rabbia c'è una continua tensione ed indagine del rapporto tra tempo e pensiero: il disegno diventa un mezzo per raccontare il fluire del tempo e le piccole figure che appaiono lentamente sulla carta, ci raccontano di situazioni emotive che cambiano, si perdono e si dissolvono in costellazioni astrali dai toni blu Klein.

Saranno presentati alcuni nuovi disegni in cui l'artista descrive vulnerabili stati d'animo attraverso una ricerca vicina all'automatismo e all'opera dello scrittore e artista belga Henry Micheaux, nei cui scritti gli stati psicologici si specchiano nella profondità e nell'intimità di un cielo notturno.

In questa personale, disegni su carta, video e ceramiche, mostrano ancora una volta un'artista che attraverso l'uso di materiali differenti affievolisce il confine tra reale e immaginario, tra inconscio e vissuto.

La mostra sarà accompagnata da un testo di Barry Schwabsky, collaboratore di Art Forum, Art in America, Tema Celeste e London Review of Books. Tra i titoli da lui pubblicati The widening Circle: Consequences of Modernism in Contemporeary Art (Cambridge University Press, 1997) e Opera: Poems 1981-2002 (Meritage Press, 2003). Recentemente ha collaborato con Luisa Rabbia per la realizzazione del libro di incisioni Drafts of Water (tiratura limitata, Edizioni Canopo).

Ciocca Arte Contemporanea is pleased to present ‘A matter of life’, the second Solo Show in the Gallery by Luisa Rabbia.


The title of the show is taken from the video, in which an ordinary old man is having a meal. While he is eating, few things come out from his mouth ‘ ….Many times one needs to vomit one’s heart out in life…’-the artist says, to vomit gives the sensation of re-starting from zero. Through the digestion of our passed experiences, the present re-births and the whole becomes part of an unique cycle of life.


The video and the drawing ‘Tears and Blood’(2002) which were shown at her first solo show in New York at Massimo Audiello Gallery in 2002, have now been extended into a ceramic floor of piece with watercolor’s effects.


The relief drawing seems to corrode the ceramic, as time passes by slowly and cancels imprints of somebody who was present.


Tears and blood (2003) is a perfect fusion between drawing and sculpture; water, tears and blood are vital liquids but also symbols of ancestral emotional situations. Here the shower is a stage for a world seen from the sky, where things are passing by quickly on their way to disappear into a black hole.


In Rabbia’s works there is a continuous tension and research about the relation between Time and Thought: the drawing is a tool used to tell how time passes by and the tiny figures that appear slowly on the paper reveal emotional situations within the process of transformation, loosing and melting themselves into blue Klein constellations.

Some new drawings will be presented in which the artist describes vulnerable moods through a research close to the Automatism and to the work of the Belgian writer and artist Henri Michaux who in his writings reflects psychological states in the deepness and intimacy of a nightly sky.

In this Solo-Show, drawings on paper, video and ceramic works, present once again an artist who is using different materials, tightening the borders between reality and imagination, unconsciousness and the experienced.


The exhibition will be accompanied by a text of Barry Schwabsky, who regularly writes for publications such as Artforum, Art in America, Tema Celeste, and the London Review of Books. He is the author of The Widening Circle: Consequences of Modernism in Contemporary Art (Cambridge University Press, 1997) and Opera: Poems 1981-2002 (Meritage Press, 2003) and he collaborated with Luisa Rabbia on the recently published limited edition book Drafts of Water.
