Curator: Friedhelm Hütte, Global Head of Art
Wangechi Mutu is Deutsche Bank’s “Artist of the Year 2010”.
With this award, Deutsche Bank opens a new chapter of its global commitment to art. The selection of Mutu follows the recommendation of an advisory board consisting of four renowned curators: Okwui Enwezor, Hou Hanru, Udo Kittelmann, and Nancy Spector. In addition to the artistic relevance of the work of Wangechi Mutu, who ranks among the most significant African contemporary artists, a decisive factor was that she equally represents the main emphases of
Deutsche Bank’s art commitment and the orientation of the corporate collection: internationality, diversity and the connection of artistic questions with social themes.
Mutu’s works are captivating due to the unique connection of horror and beauty, surreal poetry and social criticism. In extravagant collages, ink drawings, site-specific wall pieces, and installations, the artist, who was trained as a sculptor and anthropologist, processes mass-media and scientific images. She addresses issues related to black female identity between Western consumer culture, African politics and postcolonial history in her work.
